The late Jose Antonio Reyes has been slammed by his former Spain team-mate Santiago Canizares, who has claimed he ‘does not deserve a tribute like a hero’.
The former Arsenal forward died in a traffic accident on Saturday when his Mercedes Brabus A-376 spun off the motorway near the town of Alcala de Guadaira, close to Seville.
Sevilla, where Reyes began his career, tweeted the news on Saturday afternoon, saying: “We couldn’t be confirming worse news. Beloved Sevilla star José Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic collision. Rest in peace.”
A number of tributes then poured out for the forward, with a minutes applause observed for him before the Champions League final.
It is reported Reyes was driving some 50mph over the speed limit, although the exact speed is yet to be determined as part of an official investigation.
His vehicle is thought to have smashed into some concrete blocks by the side of the motorway before flipping over and bursting into flames.
And Canizares, a former Spain team-mate and ex-Valencia goalkeeper, has criticised the 35-year-old for his high-speed driving.
He tweeted: “Reyes does not deserve a tribute like a hero.
“But that does not mean that I don’t regret what happened and that I pray for their souls.”
Reyes’ cousin, Jonathon Reyes, who was sitting on the back seat of the vehicle, also died in the collision.
A third cousin, named as Juan Manuel Calderon, managed to escape the burning vehicle and was rushed to a hospital in Seville.
And since his death his native Utrera, a town near Seville, declared two days of official mourning.
The town hall said in a statement on Saturday: “This morning Utrera-born Jose Antonio Reyes has died in a traffic accident on the A-376.
“Another relative of Jose Antonio’s has also died.
“Jose Antonio has been a much-loved person in our town since the start of his footballing career with Seville Football Club, always carrying the flag for Utrera.”
