Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey insists Andre Marriner was right not to send Trent Alexander-Arnold off against Newcastle.
Furious players surrounded the referee at half-time when the Liverpool defender was not sent off for his deliberate handball.
Salomon Rondon’s effort was cleared off the line by Alexander-Arnold with his elbow in the 28th minute and Christian Atsu scored from the follow up.
Fans were also furious as they thought he should have been sent off but he was not even shown a yellow card. The right-back got two assists for the Reds as they beat Newcastle 3-2 at St James’ Park.
“I thought Andre was absolutely spot on.†Halsey told talkSPORT. “He had initially denied a goalscoring opportunity but it rebounded off him to a Newcastle player who put the rebound into the back of the net.
“Had he denied a goalscoring opportunity? You have to say no because the ball ended up in the back of the net from a rebound.
“Technically he should have cautioned Trent Alexander-Arnold for deliberate handling of the ball but it wasn’t a sending off because he didn’t technically deny a goalscoring opportunity.
“Had Andre blown his whistle or the ball not come back out to the attacker and Andre had given the penalty for denying a goalscoring opportunity, then he would have sent the player off.
“That’s law. Law 12 fouls and misconduct that is the law. If Andre had given the goal as he did and then sent the Liverpool player off and they would have appealed then they would have won their appeal because he would have been wrong in law.
“The way it all panned out, Andre was correct in law 12.â€

Halsey was also asked if the outcome of the incident would have been any different if VAR would have been in use, as it will in the Premier League next season.
He added: “VAR would not have intervened with that incident in Newcastle’s first goal because everything was correct in law so they would not have got involved in that situation.â€
