Liverpool fans angered by Raheem Sterling comments after Manchester City win Premier League

Raheem Sterling has irritated some of his old club’s supporters after his Manchester City side beat them to the Premier League title on Sunday.

The Liverpool faithful were already in poor spirits after losing out on a first league triumph in 29 years by just one point, and Sterling’s comments seemingly haven’t improved their mood.

Pep Guardiola’s men went into the season’s final day with a one point lead over Jurgen Klopp’s side, meaning they simply had to match the Reds’ result to claim the crown.

Liverpool took the lead at home to Wolves early on through Sadio Mane and City initially went a goal down at Brighton, however they came back to win 4-1 and so the Scousers’ 2-0 victory was rendered meaningless.

“I’m just delighted,” Sterling began, speaking to Sky.

“This is exactly what I came to this club for.

“To win trophies, be in these moments.

“I’m just happy to be able to pick up a second Premier League medal.

“It’s fantastic, it’s an amazing day for me.”

The interview has not gone down well with a section of the Liverpool support who have interpreted it as a dig in their direction.

Manchester United news: Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku withdraw from national squads while Marcus Rashford is doubtful for England opener

The list of Manchester United players who have withdrawn from their respective national squads through injury continues to grow.

Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku join Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial as the latest casualties while there is some concern over Marcus Rashford.

Matic was been ruled out of Serbia’s matches against Germany and Poland.

The Manchester United midfielder had missed four games through injury and returned for their 2-0 defeat against Arsenal earlier this month.

He then played 86 minutes in the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Wolves before being replaced by Juan Mata.

Matic was initially selected as Serbia’s vice-captain for a friendly in Germany on Wednesday and the Euro 2020 qualifier against Portugal on Monday.

He has now been withdrawn from the squad, though.

Serbia head coach Mladen Krstajic said: “Nemanja Matic will not play in Wolfsburg, nor in Lisbon. He played the last match in the club but did not stay in the field until the end.”

Lukaku missed the FA Cup defeat to Wolves through injury after picking up a foot injury against Paris Saint-Germain.

He was set to be part of Roberto Martinez’s Belgium squad for their upcoming fixtures against Russia and Cyprus but has now been sent back to United to continue his rehabilitation.

Reports in Belgium suggest that this is a precaution and he could still be ready for the Red Devils’ next fixture.

Luke Shaw was forced to pull out of the England squad earlier this week through injury, and was replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi, while Martial’s knee problem prevented any hopes of making the France squad.

Rashford is a major fitness doubt for Gareth Southgate’s side ahead of their first Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic on Friday.

He has been struggling with an ankle injury, which he picked up against Liverpool in February, and sat out Tuesday’s training session at St George’s Park.

Football: Call in Iran for footballers to be punished over Japan melee

TEHERAN (AFP) - A prominent Iranian politician on Tuesday (Jan 29) called for players in the country's national football team to be punished for clashing with their Japanese opponents after losing in the Asian Cup semi-finals.
In the dying minutes of Iran's 3-0 defeat to Japan on Monday, striker Sardar Azmoun slapped Japan midfielder Gaku Shibasaki in the face, sparking a melee that also involved his teammates Ehsan Hajsafi and Ramin Rezaeian.
Ali Motahari, Deputy Speaker in Iran's Parliament, called for them to be disciplined.
"When we're accused of terrorism and violence by America and Israel, the attitude that Messrs Azmoun, Hajsafi and Rezaeian showed before the eyes of the world was a fatal blow to the Iranian nation and they must be punished," Motahari wrote on his Instagram account.
"The team that could have been Asia's champions failed due to spiritual, psychological and ethical weaknesses," added the reformist politician.
Since pulling out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran last year - otherwise known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA - the United States has reimposed sanctions on the country and renewed its longstanding accusations about it sponsoring terrorism.
Team Melli, as the Iran national team are known, were widely criticised for their performance against Japan on Tuesday.

The conservative Vatan-e Emrooz daily published an article about them titled "Parjam", which is a play on the Farsi term for the JCPOA (Barjam) and translates as "the cup is lost".
It described a protest by Iran's players over an edge-of-the-box challenge as "childish" and said it distracted them and opened the way for Japan to score their first goal and gain the momentum that took them to victory.
The Iran Football Federation steered clear of the controversy, however, praising the team's "sincere efforts and endeavour" and thanking outgoing coach Carlos Quieroz of Portugal for his eight-year tenure.

Liverpool news: Sadio Mane was ‘jealous’ when Barcelona signed Philippe Coutinho in January 2018

Sadio Mane revealed he was ‘jealous’ when Barcelona signed Philippe Coutinho in 2018.

The LaLiga giants signed the forward in a deal worth up to £142million during last season’s January transfer window.

Losing a player of such magnitude has not harmed Liverpool’s attacking threat, though, but Mane admitted his departure did leave a hole.

“He is a great, great player and I’m a little bit jealous that Barcelona got him,” said the Senegal international.

“I would love to see him again but we we are happy for him.

“He really enjoyed playing alongside his team-mates and gave everything, and is still young and can improve a lot.

“I know him, he is a hard worker. Hopefully tomorrow he will still be in bed when we play!”

Manager Jurgen Klopp is pleased with the way his side moved on from the Coutinho furore with very little fuss.

“Yes, we miss Phil Coutinho a lot because he is a world-class player and I loved working with him,” said the Reds boss.

“But we had to deal without him and we did well. When I first heard he wanted to go to Barcelona I couldn’t imagine we would do that good but we did.”

Mane was asked by Spanish journalists about a potential move to LaLiga, having been linked with Barca’s arch-rivals Real Madrid in recent months.

“Very good question! You guys write it…” was the response.

“I respect LaLiga is a good league, they have great players, but the Premier League is also a wonderful league and every single player would want to play there.

“So I have a chance to play there and I am very happy, so that’s cool.”

But Spanish football has already left a lasting impression on Mane, and one former Barcelona player in particular.

“Ronaldinho was one of my heroes. I really loved watching him play, especially here at Camp Nou,” he said.

“I would have loved to play against him. Him not being here now is an advantage for us! I still love him. He is still my hero forever.

“I loved his skills, his smile for sure. Maybe when I’m not smiling on the pitch people think I am angry. I would love to have his smile, but we’re not similar like that.”

Football: Kane starts for Tottenham in Champions League final

MADRID (AFP) - Harry Kane returned from almost two months out with injury to start for Tottenham in the Champions League final against Liverpool on Saturday (June 1).
Kane has not played since damaging ankle ligaments in the first leg of the quarter-finals against Manchester City on April 9 but gave Spurs a major boost by being passed fit in Madrid.
“I think we believed and we felt that in the last few weeks he was ready to compete,” coach Mauricio Pochettino told BT Sport before kick-off.
“We give him time to feel that emotion and determination, and yesterday we confirmed that he was ready.”
Coach Mauricio Pochettino dropped Lucas Moura to make room for Kane, despite Moura scoring an incredible hat-trick as Tottenham came back to knock out Ajax in the semis.
Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min were selected behind Kane in attacking midfield.
Liverpool's own centre forward Roberto Firmino also made it into Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Firmino had missed Liverpool's last three games with a groin injury, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane completing the front three.
James Milner dropped to the bench, as Klopp picked a midfield trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Georginio Wijnaldum, who scored twice in Liverpool's stunning semi-final fightback against Barcelona.

Christian Pulisic says it would be great to play alongside Eden Hazard at Chelsea despite Belgian’s links with Real Madrid

Christian Pulisic says it would be great to play alongside Eden Hazard at Chelsea despite Belgian’s links with Real Madrid

Christian Pulisic says it would be ‘great’ to play alongside Eden Hazard at Chelsea despite the rumours linking the Belgian with a lucrative move to Real Madrid.

Hazard, 28, appears poised to move to the Bernabeu with the Blues reportedly willing to sell him for £87million this summer.

Chelsea acted in January by signing Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund for next season in a deal thought to be in the region of £58m.

It’s been suggested the American international was bought in preparation for Hazard’s departure but Pulisic maintains some hope that he will play alongside Chelsea’s star player.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s James Savundra in London, Pulisic said: “I think anyone can play alongside him [Hazard], he’s a great player. It would be great to play with him absolutely. I’m going to come in and give it my best.

“I’ve been able to see on the TV what he’s done and he’s obviously a great player.”

Hazard’s move to Real Madrid this summer appears inevitable

When the Pulisic transfer was confirmed in January, Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri claimed to have no knowledge of the deal until it was announced publicly by the club.

But Sarri’s 4-3-3 system should cater well to winger Pulisic’s strengths and the 20-year-old believes his and the Italian’s styles are a ‘great fit’.

Pulisic added: “Chelsea was a place I just couldn’t refuse. I watched Chelsea growing up and saw them have success in Europe and I always think of the team as champions.

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League and it feels like the perfect spot for me.

“I want to come in and make an impact as soon as I can. I’m going to work as hard as I can from day one to make sure I can do that.

Pulisic believes he will fit in well at Chelsea

“I think I’m going to fit in very well [into Sarri’s system]. It’s a very attacking system which will work great for me, on the wings and in great attacking positions. I think it’s a great fit.”

Pulisic arrives at Stamford Bridge knowing he will play Champions League football next season following Chelsea’s third-place finish in the Premier League last season.

There were a lot of negative moments in the 2018/19 campaign and Chelsea finished 26 points off title winners Manchester City and 25 points off runners-up Liverpool.

However, Pulisic believes there’s no reason why his new club can’t challenge for the crown next season.

He said: “People can say what they want but Chelsea had a great end to the season. They’re in the Europa League final and they finished in the Champions League spots for next season.

“Yeah absolutely, that’s our goal [to challenge for the Premier League title]. I think Chelsea is a very confident group and I’m a very confident guy and if we go in with a great attitude there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to.

Pulisic leaves an exciting Dortmund side that took Bayern Munich all the way in the race for the Bundesliga title last season but the Bavarians won their seventh consecutive title on the final day last weekend.

Among Pulisic’s former team-mates are England youngster Jadon Sancho, 19, who enjoyed a breakthrough season at Dortmund – scoring 13 goals and supplying 15 assists in all competitions in 2018/19.

And Pulisic believes Three Lions fans should be excited about what the former Manchester City player can offer in the future.

Pulisic added: “I guess there are lots of great people at Dortmund supporting you from day one. They’ve trusted me all the way and they’ve trusted a lot of young players. It’s a great place to develop.

“[Sancho]. He’s a great player and it’s been amazing to play with him. Playing on the wings with him have been a very exciting time. I can understand why a lot of the English fans are excited. They should be.”

The Hammers have taken up their one-year option to keep the right-back until 2020 and Zabaleta feels he can ‘go for another year’.

He joined the London club from Manchester City in July 2017 and has made 65 appearances, occasionally deputising for captain Mark Noble.

Zabaleta said: “It’s great news and I’m so happy.
