Football: Madrid climb to third with vital win over Sevilla

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid earned a therapeutic 2-0 victory at home to Sevilla with late strikes from Casemiro and Luka Modric as Santiago Solari's stuttering side leapfrogged the Andalusians into third spot in La Liga on Saturday (Jan 19).
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro unleashed a stinging shot from outside the area which was too powerful for outstretched keeper Tomas Vaclik, giving the European champions a deserved lead in the 78th minute after they dominated the second half.
Teenage forward Vinicius Jr was again Madrid's most dangerous outlet and had come close to breaking the deadlock with a scooping shot that just crept wide of the post before Casemiro finally broke the deadlock.
Dani Ceballos, the match-winner in last week's scrappy 2-1 victory at Real Betis, had also earlier hammered the bar as Madrid took the game by the scruff of the neck at a rainy and cold Santiago Bernabeu after a drab first half of few chances.
Modric finally sealed the victory in stoppage time with a cool finish, giving Solari's team a second straight win after their poor start to 2019, having drawn at Villarreal and lost at home to Real Sociedad.
The victory saw Madrid climb to third place on 36 points, three ahead of Sevilla who have failed to win in their last four league outings, while Barcelona, who host Leganes on Sunday, are top with 43.

MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCE

"We needed a game like this. It was a magnificent performance, we dominated every phase of the match," said Real captain Sergio Ramos.
"We scored the chances we needed to, we could have scored more but we're very happy. We really wanted to win emphatically in front of our own fans. We put them (Sevilla) under pressure from the first minute and we got our rewards. This was a vital win for us."
Solari again left out experienced left back Marcelo, in favour of youngster Sergio Reguilon, and Spain midfielder Isco but was boosted by the return of Lucas Vazquez from suspension and Karim Benzema, who wore a bandage on a fractured finger.
Benzema teed up Vinicius early in the game but the Brazilian fired straight at Vaclik.
Sevilla, who have lost momentum in the new year after making an impressive start to the season, had only one chance of note in the whole game, which left back Sergio Escudero put just wide of the near post.
Sevilla midfielder Pablo Sarabia criticised his side for not showing more ambition.
"We are not feeling good, the team is feeling very down because we tried to defend but we needed to offer more in the second half, we could barely get beyond their half," he said.
His team mate Ever Banega was even more critical, saying: "In the second half we were a disaster."

Alaves, also on 17 points, are third, with Sevilla in fourth and Atletico Madrid in fifth. Espanyol's win also means two teams from Barcelona occupy the top two places in La Liga for the first time since December 2004. Second-bottom Rayo Vallecano were beaten 2-1 at home by Getafe, while Eibar and Athletic Bilbao drew 1-1 in a Basque derby.

England 5-0 Czech Republic: Raheem Sterling has ‘won people over with his football’, Stuart Pearce tells talkSPORT

Former England international Stuart Pearce has heaped huge praise on Raheem Sterling following the forward’s splendid display against the Czech Republic.

Sterling scored a hat-trick as a rampant England stormed to a 5-0 win at Wembley to get their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign off to the perfect start.

It was a special night for Sterling

Harry Kane and Tomas Kalas’ comical own goal were the other scorers for the Three Lions.

It was a great display from Gareth Southgate’s men as they continue their good momentum from last summer’s performance at the World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals.

However, Sterling’s form has changed dramatically as the Manchester City man was somewhat of a villain among Three Lions supporters for missing a number of chances in Russia.

But the 24-year-old is a new man this season, having netted twice during England’s fantastic victory away to Spain in the UEFA Nations League in October.

Sterling leaves heartfelt tribute for Crystal Palace youth player after scoring against Czech Republic

Sterling has scored 15 goals in 27 Premier League appearances this season, excellent form considering the personal adversity he’s had to overcome with a group of Chelsea fans allegedly racially abusing him during a match at Stamford Bridge in December.

And Pearce was very impressed with Sterling’s performance and gave special praise to the player’s character, saying Sterling “has won a lot of people over with his football.”

Pearce told talkSPORT: “I think he’s won a lot of people over with his football. I really do.

“He was the only player at the World Cup that there were question marks around and unfairly I think as well. There was no need to heap that pressure on a young player like him.

“The one thing that impresses me about him is that when he plays under pressure and if he’s not doing particularly well, he doesn’t shirk. He doesn’t go and hide.

“That’s why he sticks out, he still receives the ball, he still plays every game and the amount of games he’s played for Manchester City and his country without ducking performances is commendable.”

City must 'fight till the end' for title

City must 'fight till the end' for title

LONDON • Manchester City have just won the League Cup last Sunday, but manager Pep Guardiola believes there is no time to rest as he urged his team to carry on the momentum in their bid to retain their Premier League title this season.
City will host West Ham in the league today and, when asked yesterday if his players were fatigued following the penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea, the Spaniard said: "It helps. The guys train good when you win the second title of the season (after their Community Shield win).
"The last few days, the conditions have improved, but the reality is we don't have much time to think about what has happened.
"After the West Ham game, we have three days and then Bournemouth, but we are going to pick a strong side in order to try and win the game."
While it is Guardiola's ambition to win every competition his team are contesting, he will likely be cautious when former City boss Manuel Pellegrini's Hammers visit the Etihad.
Midfielder Fernandinho (groin) and central defender Aymeric Laporte (hamstring) picked up injuries at Wembley that would sideline them for several weeks.
Fernandinho, in particular, has become one of Guardiola's most dependable lieutenants.
Since his arrival in 2013, City have won more than 70 per cent of the games in which he has played, a percentage that drops below 60 in his absence.
Most recently, when City suffered shock consecutive defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, the 33-year-old was absent.
Ilkay Gundogan and Fabian Delph are logical replacements in the defensive midfield role, but they cannot match Fernandinho's poise and tackling ability.
The Brazilian's all-round excellence even saw him selected at centre-half for the recent home win over Arsenal, and the loss of Laporte adds to the manager's concerns in that department.
Veteran Vincent Kompany has struggled for fitness and form for much of the season although John Stones is close to returning from his injury layoff.
Guardiola knows that if City are to win the Premier League again this term, and also the FA Cup and the Champions League, Fernandinho will be a crucial factor.
City, on 65 points, go into today's match a point behind leaders Liverpool, who have drawn three of their last four league matches.
"Still, they are leading," Guardiola said, shrugging off suggestions that Jurgen Klopp's men are struggling.
"There are still a lot of games to play and they are leading by one point. The lead is shorter than I expected a few weeks ago, but they are still leading.
"I didn't watch the Liverpool game against Manchester United (0-0 draw) so I cannot give you an opinion.
"The difference is one point with 33 points to play. It's in Liverpool's hands, but it's in ours too, we have to put on pressure. We fight until the end for the title."

Ultimate Charity Auction: Watch Anthony Joshua fight in New York, go behind the scenes at Tottenham’s new stadium and more amazing experiences

A chance to witness Anthony Joshua’s first fight on American soil at New York’s Madison Square Garden is topping the bill at a global online auction that has raised more than £1million since its inception.

The Ultimate Charity Auction, which has just launched and runs until Thursday, April 11, has once again brought together some of the biggest names in sport to offer a glittering array of over 100 money-can’t-buy experiences.

One lucky bidder and a guest could be taking their seat to witness Joshua take on Jarrell Miller in NYC in a star-studded auction prize, which also includes flights, accommodation and boxing gloves signed and personalised by the current IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion of the world.

FC Barcelona, long-term supporters of the Ultimate Charity Auction, have once again come up trumps with an incredible opportunity for two people to watch some of the world’s best players train – and then take in a home match at the Camp Nou.

Closer to home, there is a tantalising chance to go behind the scenes at the new state-of-the-art, 62,000-capacity Tottenham Hotspur stadium, escorted by club legend Ledley King, or enjoy being the star of your very own Arsenal matchday programme along with tickets in the Director’s Box.

Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are among the star clubs and players who have also donated star prizes.

The auction also includes the chance to take your place in the studio and watch either Gillette Soccer Saturday, Chris Evans or the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show on talkSPORT unfold, or join two friends on a round of golf at Hanbury Manor with former Tottenham, Liverpool and England goalkeeper Ray Clemence.

Fresh from his pursuit of a play-off spot, and potential Premier League football next season, Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has once again supported the auction by offering a chance to take part in a training session with the Robins and then enjoy lunch with the boss.

There is also an opportunity to benefit from an exclusive coaching session with a LMA Ambassador, or be part of a team in the annual LMA seven-a-side tournament at St George’s Park.

Away from the beautiful game, the Ultimate Charity Auction also boasts a cricketing masterclass courtesy of Andrew Strauss, VIP experiences at either Royal Ascot and Henley Royal Regatta or a chance to star in the next instalment of Football Manager.

There is also the Ultimate sports fan ticket bundle up for grabs which includes two tickets to the AIG Women’s British Open, England’s rugby team taking on Wales at Twickenham in September, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and any PDC Premier League Darts Night of your choice during the 2020 season.

The auction also includes a host of other unique prizes from across the football world including mascot packages, executive boxes and a chance to see your favourite players get put through their paces in training sessions.

The Ultimate Charity Auction has raised more than £1million for national and local charities since its inception after attracting glittering prizes from household names in sport, celebrity and lifestyle.

This year, the beneficiaries will be the League Managers Association Charity – In The Game – and the GeeWizz charitable foundation, headed by veteran fundraiser and auction founder Gina Long MBE.

GeeWizz provides specialist equipment to children and young adults up to the age of 21, living in Suffolk and Norfolk, with life-threatening conditions, disability or cancer.

What the Ultimate Charity Auction aims to achieve

The Ultimate Charity Auction was launched in 2012 to provide an online fundraising platform to support national and local charities. The global auction has already raised £1,018,000 and was designed to capture the imagination of its bidders, offering money can’t buy prizes and experiences from the worlds of sport, lifestyle and celebrity.

This year it will be raising funds for GeeWizz Charity and the League Managers Association Charity–In the Game. In particular, the auction will be funding a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disneyland for a little girl called Emily Mullen from Lowestoft, Suffolk. Emily sadly suffers from a range of complex health conditions meaning that she is now classed as terminally ill. She is also blind and has developed a love for Disney songs. Funds from the auction will cover the costs of this trip for Emily and her family, giving them the opportunity to make memories of a lifetime.

GeeWizz Charity support children and young adults who live with a life-threatening condition, a disability or cancer by purchasing specialist equipment such as electric wheelchairs and bespoke car sears, and physiotherapy that the NHS does not fund.

The LMA Charity–In the Game aims to increase its funding, remit and visibility of the LMA Charity and increase its contribution to the wider community. They help members and their families who have fallen on difficult times or find themselves in need of specialist care, advice or assistance.

Funds from this year’s auction will help support projects around mental health in sport.

Gina said: “The Ultimate Charity Auction has always captured the imagination of both donors and those bidding on the fantastic money-can’t-buy prizes.

“But this year’s auction will be the biggest and best yet with a glittering array or prizes from the world of sport, celebrity and lifestyle.

“We are humbled to have such a star-studded list of auctions which we hope will raised an incredible sum of money and make a huge difference to the lives of the people we support.”

Watford 4-1 Fulham: Cottagers suffer Premier League relegation with five games remaining

Fulham have been relegated from the Premier League following a heavy 4-1 defeat at Watford.

The Cottagers become the second team to have their Championship status confirmed, three days after Huddersfield’s fate was sealed at Crystal Palace.

Fulham will spend next season in the Championship

3

Fulham will spend next season in the Championship

Three second-half goals from Watford shattered Fulham’s resistance at Vicarage Road after Ryan Babel had cancelled out Abdoulaye Doucoure’s opener.

Will Hughes netted a thunderous volley before Troy Deeney and Kiko Femenia completed the rout.

Following 33 league fixtures they have a disappointing total of 17 points, which leaves them 16 from safety.

With minus-46 they also have the division’s worst goal difference, having already sacked two managers in Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri, and all after their net spend of £106million over the past two transfer windows represented the third highest in the league.

It took until midway through the first half, perhaps owing to the pressure Fulham felt and the likelihood Watford considered Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Wolves their priority, for play to become stretched but it did so quickly and convincingly.

The fit-again Aleksandar Mitrovic had just had a shot routinely saved by Ben Foster when Femenia broke down the right wing and delivered a dangerous cross towards Deeney, who should at least have tested Sergio Rico with a diving header.

Doucoure then scored his second in two games when receiving possession from Hughes towards the edge of the area, carrying it just inside as the visitors’ defence backed off, and then striking low, inside the left post and beyond the diving Rico’s reach.

Will Hughes scored a stunner

If Fulham were expected to then struggle in the same way they have on so many occasions this season, they instead briefly demonstrated some of the resilience that caretaker manager Scott Parker – whose playing career owed much to that very quality – has tried to instil in them.

In possession in the 33rd minute, the again-lively Ryan Sessegnon played a fine through-ball to Babel that took out Adrian Mariappa and left the forward with only Foster to round, which he did before calmly finishing into the back of the net.

The visitors quickly again found themselves under pressure in the second half, with both Jose Holebas and influential substitute Andre Gray threatening, but it took a superb strike for Watford’s lead to be restored.

When Maxime Le Marchand attempted to head clear from a 63rd-minute corner, he did so only as far as inside the edge of the area, from where the composed Hughes calmly strode forward under the high ball to brilliantly and powerfully volley towards the top right corner and in.

Amid further poor defending in the 69th minute, Gray raced clear into Fulham’s penalty area and squared to Deeney who put victory beyond doubt by finishing with conviction into the bottom right corner.

Gray then furthered his claims to start on Sunday at Wembley, this time providing a similar assist for Femenia, who from narrowly further out than Deeney also finished first time, but with the side of his right foot and towards the top left corner, lifting the hosts to eighth.

Football: Chelsea's success next season hinges on transfer ban being lifted, says former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Football: Chelsea's success next season hinges on transfer ban being lifted, says former striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

SINGAPORE - Maurizio Sarri should be given more time as Chelsea manager, but the club's success next season will also depend greatly on whether it succeeds in getting a transfer ban lifted.
That's the view of former Blues striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who will be in town to catch Chelsea's English Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday (April 28) with local fans the Clarke Quay Fountain Square at the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media.
A win would strengthen Chelsea's hopes for a top-four finish, which also ensures qualification to the Champions League next season. The Blues are fourth on 67 points, one ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal and three head of United in sixth, with three games left this season.
Hasselbaink felt that Chelsea - and Sarri - have to make a statement they are going in the right direction by beating United.
The 47-year-old told the Sunday Times: "The team started the season really well and the expectations were raised because the team went 12 games unbeaten and were top of the table, but a lot of (observers) knew they could not maintain the position because they don't have the squad that Manchester City or Liverpool has.
"Sarri came in with a totally different football style which other teams eventually adapted to, and Chelsea themselves have not really adapted to these changes.
"Sunday will be a very important match and Chelsea must show they can beat a top-six rival away, something they have not done all season.

"And once the season is over, you have to look at the plusses and minuses, and then build on that by giving Sarri more time because the club already made a decision to go with his style by appointing him in the first place."
The Dutchman also believes that Chelsea need to strengthen their squad in the summer, with the London club facing the prospect of losing their top striker Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.
But it will depend on whether the Blues can overturn the two-window transfer ban Fifa slapped onto the club in February for breaching rules related to the signing of players under the age of 18. Chelsea have appealed against the ruling.
Hasselbaink said: "Chelsea definitely need to strengthen the squad, regardless of whether Hazard stays or goes.
"They need a better balance, and in midfield, they also need more creativity, like how Manchester City has in players like Kevin de Bruyne.
"They also need a leftback, centrehalf and most importantly, an out-and-out striker that is top quality."
Hasselbaink (1999, 2001) and Ivorian Didier Drogba (2007, 2010) are the only two Chelsea strikers to top the Premier League's scoring charts in the last 20 years, and he believes he knows why Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain (four goals in 14 games) has struggled since his loan move from Juventus in January.
Hasselbaink said: "You need to be at your physical peak in the Premier League. It's a lot quicker and more physical than the Italian Serie A or Spanish LaLiga.
"Higuain is (31), he needs time to adapt... If he was 26 and arrived in the Premier League, it would have been easier for him, and I am sure he would have done well."

Most shocking transfers, including Celtic hero Mo Johnston joining Rangers and Sol Campbell going from Tottenham to Arsenal

How do you annoy an entire set of football fans?

Well, asking any one of this lot is a good start. Each one of these players made the unpopular decision to leave either in controversial circumstances or to play for a hated rival.

We’re assuming printing those ‘Judas’ signs on pieces of paper was worth the money to those Tottenham fans angry at Sol Campbell moving to better his career

We’re assuming printing those ‘Judas’ signs on pieces of paper was worth the money to those Tottenham fans angry at Sol Campbell moving to better his career

Below are 11 deals that have seen plenty of anger spill out from the stands at various football grounds, including Glasgow, London as well as Florence over the years and here, talkSPORT.com ranks them by the despair caused by their transfers, kicking off with Alan Smith leaving Leeds United for Manchester United.

11. Alan Smith moves from Leeds to Man United

12

11. Alan Smith moves from Leeds to Man United – The boyhood Leeds fan once claimed he would never join Man United and was in tears when his beloved Whites were relegated in 2004. Still, following the drop the club were forced to accept a £7m bid from their hated rivals and Smith wasn’t too popular with supporters, although the player probably wouldn’t have chosen Old Trafford if it had been up to him. Leeds legend Peter Lorimer has since revealed that, of the interested clubs, Man United were the only ones prepared to pay the transfer fee in full, rather than spread out payments. “Leeds fans didn't want him to go there but as far as the club is concerned, Alan Smith going there probably saved us from going into administration or liquidation a lot earlier than we did,” he said.

10. Nick Barmby swaps Everton for Liverpool

12

10. Nick Barmby swaps Everton for Liverpool – Everton were shocked when Barmby rejected a lucrative new contract to keep him at Goodison in the summer of 2000 because he wanted to play for Liverpool. Everton chairman Bill Kenwright had previously pleaded Barmby’s case with England manager Kevin Keegan in an attempt to get the player more international recognition and was stunned when told of Barmby’s desire to move across Stanley Park. “It was hearing he had used six of the worst words in the English language as far as Everton fans are concerned: ‘I want to play for Liverpool,’” he said. He was the first player to swap blue for red since Dave Hickson in 1959 and when the Everton fans gave him stick at Anfield in the October Merseyside derby, he popped up with a goal and celebrated wildly, as Liverpool won 3-1.

9. Carlos Tevez is welcomed to Manchester after leaving United for City

12

9. Carlos Tevez is welcomed to Manchester after leaving United for City – Tevez was very popular at Man United during a successful two-year loan spell where he won the Champions League in 2008, with fans regularly chanting: ‘Fergie, sign him upÂ’. A year later, though, he was a Man City player – the first to move directly to the club since 1999 – and City supporters carried on the chant just to rub it in. The club, meanwhile, celebrated the deal publicly with a huge billboard reading: ‘Welcome to ManchesterÂ’ in a nod to the fansÂ’ claim that their club is the only one in Manchester given that Old Trafford lies outside the city boundaries. Sir Alex Ferguson wasnÂ’t impressed: “a small club with a small mentality,” he said at the time.

8. Ashley Cole leaves Arsenal for London rivals Chelsea

12

8. Ashley Cole leaves Arsenal for London rivals Chelsea – Though it has no doubt faded over the years, Arsenal fans still reserve a special hatred for Cole. He joined Chelsea in 2006 after his relationship with the Gunners turned sour following allegations of tapping up in 2005 and he fanned the flames when he revealed in his autobiography the anger he felt at being offered a new £55,000-a-week contract by Arsenal. This gave rise to the nickname ‘Cashley Cole’, though his quotes have been taken slightly out of context in that he believed he was being offered considerably less than the Gunners had initially promised to pay him.

7. Johan Cruyff leaves Ajax for Feyenoord

12

7. Johan Cruyff leaves Ajax for Feyenoord – Ajax decided not to offer Cruyff a new deal, so what could he do to spite them? Join fierce rivals Feyenoord, of course. He had starred in Ajax’s three successive European Cups between 1971 and 1973, but in 1983 at the age of 37 he joined Feyenoord, a team who often like to remind Ajax they were the first Dutch club to win Europe’s biggest prize (in 1970). And by the end of the campaign, even the most die-hard Feyenoord fan had warmed to the idea of Cruyff playing for their team. How could they not when they were celebrating a league and cup double with him in the side, along with the emergence of a young player named Ruud Gullit?

6. Paul Ince goes from hero to zero after Man United pic

12

6. Paul Ince goes from hero to zero after Man United pic – Ince was West HamÂ’s bright young talent in the 1980s and Hammer of the Year in 1989, but the boyhood Irons fan incurred the wrath of fellow supporters when he left that year. West Ham were relegated and it was always going to be hard to keep the midfielder, but after he was pictured in a Man United shirt BEFORE actually signing for the club he was forever known as Judas. He has since explained it was done before he went on holiday, so his break was not interrupted by coming back for the obligatory snap once the deal was completed. However, it was accidentally published and the Upton Park faithful never forgot and reminded him of their feelings towards him every time he played them.

5. Sol Campbell causes outrage in north London

12

5. Sol Campbell causes outrage in north London – Campbell is one of the brightest young talents to have come through the youth ranks at Tottenham and fans loved him. That respect disappeared as soon as he left the club for nothing and signed for north London rivals Arsenal in 2001, where he became part of the ‘InvinciblesÂ’ side that won the Premier League title at White Hart Lane. Ouch.

4. Man United pinch Eric Cantona from Leeds and make ‘Ooh, aah, Cantona’ their own

12

4. Man United pinch Eric Cantona from Leeds and make ‘Ooh, aah, Cantona’ their own – The moral of this transfer tale is that it never hurts to ask. When Leeds attempted to sign Man United full-back Denis Irwin in November 1992 they were rebuffed, only for the Red Devils to counter with a speculative offer for mercurial Frenchman Cantona, who'd won the title with the Yorkshire club earlier that year. Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson agreed to the £1.2m deal and Sir Alex Ferguson got his man. Cantona's status as a hero among Leeds fans understandably disappeared, but a lot of anger was aimed at Wilkinson for letting him go for so little.

3. Luis Figo moves from Barca to Real and pigs fly

12

3. Luis Figo moves from Barca to Real and pigs fly – Figo was a Barcelona star and part of a team which racked up two titles, a Spanish Cup and a European Cup Winners Cup, but when Real Madrid called in 2000 he couldn’t turn them down. "I came to Madrid to win more titles and for prestige. And on better financial terms, of course." It was a bitter pill for Barca fans to swallow as they watched Figo herald Madrid's 'Galactico' era and they never forgave him, with one particular Clasico at the Camp Nou standing out. In November 2002 a variety of objects, including coins, bottles and the head of a pig showered the pitch as Barca supporters showed their former player how much they disliked him. Figo went on to win two Spanish titles and the Champions League with Madrid.

2. Roberto Baggio joining Juve causes a riot in Florence

12

2. Roberto Baggio joining Juve causes a riot in Florence – Fiorentina fans hate Juventus. The dislike stretches back to 1982 when Juve snatched the title from their grasp in controversial circumstances on the final day of the season, while the Old Lady also beat them in the 1990 UEFA Cup final. So when Fiorentina’s golden boy Baggio was sold to their rivals for £8m shortly afterwards, fans rioted. He returned to Florence as a Juve player in 1991 and the team bus required a police escort through the streets. During the game, he received all sorts of abuse, but the game ended in a home win, which also saw Baggio refuse to take a penalty. He was later substituted and managed to wind up the Juve fans, too, when he stopped to pick up and drape a Fiorentina scarf around his neck while walking off the pitch.

1. Mo Johnston manages to alienate two sets of supporters

12

1. Mo Johnston manages to alienate two sets of supporters – Johnston’s arrival at Rangers in 1989 managed to anger fans on both sides of the Glasgow divide. Having scored 52 goals in three seasons at Celtic, Johnston spent two years at Nantes in France and was expected to don the green and white shirt on his return to the Scottish league. He was even pictured in the summer of 1989 alongside Hoops boss Billy McNeill, and said: "There’s only one team I want to play for and that’s Celtic.” But nothing had been officially signed and Rangers manager Graeme Souness – no stranger to controversy – pounced and took Johnston to Ibrox, making him the club's first major Catholic signing. He slowly won over sceptical Gers fans, thanks to 31 goals in 76 games, plus wildly celebrating his goal in the Old Firm derby.
