League Two round-up: MK Dons promoted, Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield Town survive, Notts County relegated

Notts County have been relegated from the Football League for the first time in the club’s history.

The Magpies’ relegation was confirmed by their 3-1 defeat at Swindon.

Neal Ardley’s team had to win at the County Ground to stand any chance of avoiding the drop as they went into the final day of the season in 23rd place in League Two, two points behind Macclesfield and with an inferior goal difference of eight.

It looked a possibility when Kane Hemmings put County in front from the penalty spot early in the second half but Swindon replied with goals from Kaiyne Woolery and a Theo Robinson double.

Relegation means Notts County, who have won only nine league matches all season, lose their proud status as the oldest Football League club, having been formed in 1862.

That mantle now passes across the River Trent to Nottingham Forest, who were founded in 1865.

Notts County’s misery meant elation for Macclesfield as they survived courtesy of a 1-1 home draw with Cambridge, who led through Paul Lewis’ 44th-minute strike.

Elliott Durrell equalised for the Silkmen in the second half.

At the other end of the table, MK Dons were victorious in the winner-takes-all shootout against automatic promotion rivals Mansfield.

The Stags went into the game at Stadium MK behind the Dons on goal difference and had to win to climb above their opponents and into third place but David Wheeler’s second-minute header saw the hosts win 1-0.

Therefore, Mansfield go into the play-offs where they will be joined by Newport after Jamille Matt’s 87th-minute equaliser at Morecambe saw County cement seventh spot.

Aaron Collins had put the Shrimps in front in the first half.

Colchester were the team pushed out of the play-offs by Matt’s late goal. The U’s had put themselves firmly in the frame with a 3-0 win at champions Lincoln. Brennan Dickenson’s goal and a brace from Sammie Szmodics gave Colchester victory, but it proved in vain.

Tranmere will be in the play-offs but they lost 3-1 at Crawley, who led at half-time through goals from Ashley Nathaniel-George and Filipe Morais. James Norwood’ penalty reduced Rovers deficit but Panutche Camara completed the scoring late on.

Joe Martin and Jordan Gibson scored in Stevenage’s 2-0 home win against Cheltenham while Grimsby were also 2-0 winners against Crewe, with Harry Davis and Joe Grayson on the scoresheet.

Northampton rounded off their season in style with a 5-2 success at Oldham, who led through Johan Branger’s strike.

Callum Lang got another one for Oldham before substitute Junior Morias struck late on for Northampton.

Promoted Bury drew 1-1 at home against Port Vale as Jordan Rossiter cancelled out Tom Pope’s opening goal while it finished goalless between Forest Green and Exeter and Yeovil against Carlisle.

Pep impressed by toffees

Pep impressed by toffees

LONDON • The Christmas mood is being felt early at Manchester City, with manager Pep Guardiola lavishing praise on Everton, their opponents in the Premier League today.
The Toffees remain the only side to have played two league matches at City's Etihad Stadium against Guardiola and not lost, following two 1-1 draws.
The City boss, in a sky blue Christmas jumper at his pre-match press conference yesterday, said: "We make good games but we dropped four points (against Everton).
"Tomorrow is another game, the Everton team has changed completely with (Gylfi) Sigurdsson and Richarlison, Yerry Mina.
"They are a top side. I'm really impressed with how they have done so far. They played well not just at Liverpool (1-0 loss), but also at Chelsea (0-0 draw).
"Marco Silva's teams are always well-organised. We're going to speak today to discuss how we can attack them more fluently."
City are looking to bounce back following their first league defeat, 2-0 at Chelsea, the last time out. One point behind leaders Liverpool, the champions can claim top spot with a draw thanks to a better goal difference. The Reds, on 42 points, face Manchester United at Anfield tomorrow.

The statistics are looking good for City. They have not suffered consecutive league defeats since December 2016, when they lost to Chelsea and Leicester.
The possible return of playmaker Kevin de Bruyne and striker Sergio Aguero from injury, as Guardiola suggested yesterday, would be a boost for the team as well.
To add icing to the Christmas cake, the champions will also be buoyed by the fact they have won their last nine league games at home with an aggregate of 33-6.
Everton defender Michael Keane, however, believes that his team can beat City today.
"We will go to City with the belief we can cause them a lot of problems," he said on the club website.
"We have to believe we can win. There has been a lot of progress this season. If you compare us to last season, we are completely different.
"The manager has brought in brilliant players, the squad is a lot deeper and we are ready to compete at the top end. We just need to get over that hurdle of becoming one of the top-six sides and I think we will really kick on when we achieve that."
Everton manager Silva is feeling confident after avoiding defeat in five of their last six games.
"It's a good game for us to enjoy. To challenge a team like City will be tough but our players and team have shown they enjoy a game like this as well," he said at his pre-match conference yesterday.
British media also reported yesterday that City are eyeing a move for Leicester and England left-back Ben Chilwell after Guardiola's frustrations with Benjamin Mendy's injury problems.
The Spaniard, however, dismissed those claims during his conference, insisting that the club will not make any new signings in the January transfer window.

The Toffees are without three of their defenders as Yerry Mina, Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka are all sidelined while Lucas Digne and Idrissa Gueye both are likely to feature for Silva's side. Racism in football: Police investigating West Ham supporters filmed singing anti-Semitic chant prior to Manchester United match

Police are investigating fans seen on video chanting anti-Semitic slurs prior to Saturday’s Premier League defeat by Manchester United.

West Ham have vowed to ban for life a group of supporters filmed singing the abuse prior to the game.

In the latest in a series of alleged racist incidents this week, the fans were filmed singing an abusive song about London rivals Tottenham, who have a large Jewish following, on a tram before the Hammers’ match at Old Trafford

The short clip has since been shared thousands of times on social media and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said on Sunday they are investigating and appealed for information.

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Boyce of GMP said: “Racism of any kind has no place in our society and I would like to reassure the public that we are taking this matter extremely seriously.

“Here in Manchester we pride ourselves on making sure fans from far and wide are welcomed and it is disappointing that a small few have brought shame on football in this way.

“Let me be really clear – racial abuse will not be tolerated and anyone that partakes in this kind of behaviour can expect to be investigated by the police.

“We welcome West Ham United’s statement which quite rightly condemns these disgusting and abhorrent slurs and we will endeavour to work closely with them to identify those in the video and I would also ask anyone with any footage of the incident or information they think can help us in our enquires to please contact us immediately and pass this on.”

Shortly after the footage appeared, West Ham issued a statement which read: “We are disgusted by the contents of the video circulating on social media this evening.

“We are taking immediate action to try to identify the offenders, whose details we will be handing over to the police and will be banned for life from London Stadium and from travelling with the club.

“West Ham United is unequivocal in its stance – there is no place for this kind of behaviour at our club. We do not want people like this associated with West Ham United.

“They are not welcome at our club, they are not welcome in civilised society.”

Equality and inclusion organisation Kick It Out tweeted: “We received a report of a video of a group of West Ham fans chanting vile antisemitic abuse today. We welcome the swift and positive response of @WestHamUtd and support the club’s determination to ban the perpetrators.”

On Thursday night Chelsea denied three individuals entry to their Europa League match at Slavia Prague after they were identified as being involved in a social media video which included a racially abusive chant about Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.

On the same night, Arsenal condemned racist abuse directed at Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly during their Europa League win at the Emirates Stadium, and also said they would issue its perpetrator a life ban.

The recent spate of incidents of racial abuse have prompted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to urge everyone in the game to adopt a zero tolerance approach – and give referees the power to abandon matches.

In a statement issued earlier on Saturday, Infantino said: “In recent days, it has been very sad to see a number of racist incidents in football. This is really not acceptable. Racism has no place in football, just as it has no place in society either.

“FIFA stands together with Prince Gouano, Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose, as well as any other player, coach, fan or participant in a football match who has suffered from racism, whether at the highest professional level or in a school playground. Racism needs to end. Full stop.

“We introduced the so-called ‘three-step procedure’ at our tournaments: a mechanism that allows referees to go as far as to abandon a match in case of discriminatory incidents.

“FIFA urges all member associations, leagues, clubs and disciplinary bodies to adopt the same procedure, as well as a zero-tolerance approach to incidents of racism in football, and to apply harsh sanctions for any such kind of behaviour.”

On Friday night, a match in Ligue 1 was stopped for several minutes after Amiens defender Prince Gouano suffered alleged racial abuse at Dijon.

A man was arrested after the incident, which led to 25-year-old Gouano asking for play to be stopped in the closing stages of the goalless draw.

Last month monkey chants were aimed at England players during a Euro 2020 qualifier away to Montenegro, after which Tottenham defender Danny Rose said he was looking forward to retiring from a game which has done too little to tackle the problem.

Meanwhile, England and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has rejected the proposal of walking off the pitch, insisting doing so would simply ‘let the racists win’.

Among them were Golden Boot winners, European Cup winners, World Cup champions and Lionel Messi, but it was a 22-year-from Lancaster, who stood tallest, literally, on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay’s growth spurt is well documented. At the start of 2015 he was 5’7, he is now 6’4 and was man of the match against Barcelona.

McTominay dominated the United midfield

While his inclusion in the starting XI may have initially raised eyebrows, McTominay went about justifying Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith in him.

Despite Manchester United narrowly losing 1-0 in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final, the Scotland international turned in a commanding performance, marshalling the midfield which earned him plenty of praise.

Scott McTominay outperformed Barcelona stars, Scotland legend tells talkSPORT

“He’s added to his name. He was very, very good. He was positive, he was reliable, he was aggressive. He’s proven to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he can be trusted, which is vital for a young player,” said former United defender Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport.

Some may consider this an overstatement from Ferdinand, but in only his second European outing of the season, the stats suggest McTominay is worthy of the credit.

According to The Sportsman, the powerful midfielder won 100% of his tackles, both on the ground and aerially, while he had a pass accuracy of 80%.

McTominay was repeatedly singled out for his displays by former manager Jose Mourinho last season – winning the manager’s player of the year award last season – and appears to have earned the trust of his new boss.

“The boy’s developing every time he plays,” Solskjaer said. “He comes into training with a fantastic attitude and that’s the way to improve. Every game he plays he grows and grows.

“Today he was the one to take the ball down to settle us because we had to slow the game down, we were too quick to give the ball away and after 15 minutes I thought we settled and Scott, Fred and Paul (Pogba), the three midfielders, did really well.”

If McTominay can replicate his performance at the Nou Camp next week, United have every chance of making another miracle comeback which will require a similar effort to their heroics in the last round against Paris Saint-Germain.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appointed Manchester United manager: Full transcript of first press conference, featuring transfers, Sir Alex Ferguson and Virgil van Dijk

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been confirmed as Manchester United manager on a permanent basis after excelling in the role of caretaker over the past few months.

Since succeeding Jose Mourinho in the Old Trafford dugout last December, Solskjaer has restored United’s pride and got them challenging for a Premier League top four finish and into the final stages of the Champions League.

Ole’s at the wheel – and this time it’s permanent

His fine work was rewarded with a three-year contract, as Solskjaer fulfilled a dream to become the full-time Red Devils boss.

The Norwegian met the press for the first time since the announcement on Thursday afternoon, and discussed subjects including United’s summer transfer business, his talk with Sir Alex Ferguson – and even Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s housing arrangements.

You can read the full transcript of Solskjaer’s first press conference as Manchester United’s permanent manager, below…

On his dream job

“This has been my ultimate dream all the time. Maybe a naive dream but I have always had this dream – it has always been in my mind.

“I’m so honoured and privileged to be given this fantastic responsibility.

“Proud isn’t the right word; I’m happy and honoured it’s the start of something new, a fresh start. Now the hard work starts.”

On the future

“I’m just going to be my self. I know the expectations of the club.

Solskjaer was unveiled as United’s permanent manager on Thursday afternoon

“Of course I want to be successful and I can’t wait to get on to the challenge of improving this great bunch of players, a squad full of potential.

“We have worked for three months and the improvement is there to be seen. There’s so much more to come from them. We know we have a way to go.”

On his targets and summer business

“When I got the job we were 11 points behind fourth, and now we have a great chance to get top four or even top three. That’s the short term target in the league.

“We have been discussing how to move forward. That doesn’t mean X amount of money or X amount of players, but it’s now easier to be clear about what we need to do.

“We will do some business this summer.

“The lure of the Champions League is important for some players but to play for Manchester United you know you will be here playing Champions League over your contract.

“We are in a great position to get in the Champions League but that’s not decided until May 12.

“We probably need to get going before then with talks with players to come in and who’s going to stay.

“To know who the manager is for the club next season is helpful for any player to decide where he wants to play. We’ve got a couple of players we’re in talks with and hopefully we can get their futures sorted.

“So many that have been written about and so many players agents I have been in touch with that want to come here, and when we decide what we have to do hopefully we will get them by pre-season.”

On speaking with Sir Alex Ferguson

“I have spoken to him.

“I’m not going to discuss what we spoke about, but it is one of the first phone calls you make when things were more or less decided.”

On pressure

“We are a team. The staff I have had have been fantastic and I have had some great backing from Ed [Woodward, executive vice-chairman] which is great.

“Communication is important.

“The players have been great, and the supporters have made these three months for me unbelievable, but now it’s up to us together to keep making progress because we know there’s room for improvement.”

On what he has changed

“What we have done… I’ve come in and tried to put smiles on people’s faces

“Whether you do that by winning or speaking to [the players] or having meetings it’s about creating an environment everyone wants to be a part of to be their best self.

“Give them the freedom to be their best selves.

“We were lucky and we won the first few games, that helped.

“As a striker I was always an optimist, you look back and how it feels and what it feels like to be a champion and these players can’t wait to see them get that feeling.”

On the summer plan

“Everything is step by step – you don’t make radical changes.

“I can’t wait to get through a pre-season with them with different methods.

“Manchester United are a huge club with loads of tradition, it’s about taking it step by step getting the right people in the right positions.

“We can’t complain – it’s a fantastically run club.”

On returning to United as manager

“When I do leave here, if I can look back and have had success and lift trophies, I would be more happy than I was as a player. That’s a bigger achievement.

“As a player it was fantastic to work under the best manager in the world and now I’m at the top working with them.

“I have dreamt about it and visualised it myself. We have had three months and the players have responded fantastically and we are looking forward to working together.”

On winning the Premier League again

“To lift the Premier League trophy is what we expect, what we’re used to, what we have done so many times.

“It’s not like it’s going to happen overnight, catching 15, 16, 17 points on the top teams. I know we will be successful, but it’s about taking it step by step.”

On the players

“The players want to come in and do the work and play football.

“We had some great chats today but most of it was about Watford [United’s next opponent]; we are thinking about that, now they know I’m staying for a bit longer than expected.

“Players who get complacent never last at this club and managers are same.

“I can’t rest now I’ve got a job, we’re looking forward and we’ve got to work harder.”

On his backroom staff

“Mike [Phelan, assistant] is a key part of the set up and they’re talking to each other.

“I have voiced my opinion and hope the set up will continue as the staff we have work.

“I’m not looking to make any changes there so hopefully it will be the same.”

On long-term goals

“The day I leave I hope it’s with a smile on my face having given the supporters a good time.

“I will always be myself. I won’t change – I will be an optimistic and positive guy and we will do that tomorrow.”

On kicking Virgil van Dijk out the house he rents from Solskjaer
