England are preparing for the Nations League match with Holland

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate will see this as the perfect chance for England to progress even further and win a tournament following their efforts in last summer’s World Cup, but Ronald Koeman’s side are rejuvenated and will certainly be no pushover.

Southgate’s preparations will not have been helped following domestic finals, which have seen several players only link up with the squad on Tuesday, following the Champions League final.

England have not faced the Dutch in a competitive clash since that famous 4-1 win at Euro 96 and the eight meetings since have all been friendlies.

England 4-1 Netherlands – 1996

One of the greatest game’s in the nation’s history, the Three Lions were rampant – or were they?

Revisionism has left us with the notion England were in stunning form against the Dutch but actually they struggled in the first-half, despite taking the lead through an Alan Shearer penalty.

The second-half saw a surge from the hosts at Wembley and they swept their opponents aside with another three goals, including THAT Alan Shearer strike, where he, Teddy Sheringham, and Paul Gascoigne appeared to operate on a telepathic level.

Patrick Kluivert did sour the afternoon with his goal but the match remains on of the most well-remember in an incredible summer of football.

England 0-2 Netherlands – 2001

Louis van Gaal’s side outclassed England at White Hart Lane as Sven Goran Eriksson made several changes to his side with the crucial World Cup qualifier with Germany in mind.

A stunning long-range effort from Mark van Bommel flew beyond Nigel Martyn, while Manchester United’s new striker Ruud van Nistelrooy doubled their advantage.

Darius Vassell got his England debut off to a dream start with a stunning overhead kick equaliser to earn his side a draw.

Patrick Kluivert had put the Dutch ahead, when his effort deflected off the outstretched leg of Sol Campbell, but England, who had Vassell up front alongside fellow debutant Michael Ricketts and Emile Heskey, battled back and were level on the hour.

Jermain Defoe came off the bench to score twice for England, who had fallen behind to two first-half strikes from Dirk Kuyt and Van der Vaart, in a mixed showing ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.

David Beckham started the match and looked sharp, but was replaced at the break by Wright-Phillips, although it was the introduction of Defoe that turned the game for England.

England 2-3 Netherlands – 2012

It would be three years before these two came together and it was well worth the wait unless you were English.

It was the Three Lions’ first match since Capello resigned and former defender Stuart Pearce was placed in charge.

Scott Parker was given the captain’s armband for England, who fell behind to goals by Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

With five minutes remaining, Gary Cahill and Ashley Young made it 2-2, but Robben won it in stoppage-time with a wonderful solo effort.

England 1-2 Netherlands  – 2016

On a night when both teams paid tribute to the legendary Johan Cruyff, the Dutch did their former player proud with victory at Wembley, as they came from behind after Jamie Vardy had steered in a Kyle Walker cross.

Vincent Janssen scored from the spot five minutes after the break, following a handball by Danny Rose, before Luciano Narsingh scored the decisive goal.

Jesse Lingard scored his first goal for England as they earned a deserved win in Amsterdam.

The win extended Southgate’s new-look side’s unbeaten run to seven matches and was their first win over the Ducth since Euro 96, as they continued to build towards the World Cup in Russia.
