Football: Wasteful Barca held to goalless draw at defiant Lyon

LYON, France (REUTERS) - Barcelona were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Olympique Lyonnais in their Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday (Feb 19) as both sides remained unbeaten in this season's competition.
The La Liga leaders dominated the match at the Groupama stadium but lacked accuracy up front and were grateful to their goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen who made two great saves.
Lyon were lively in the first half but ran out of steam after the break and were holding on in the closing stages as Lionel Messi tried in vain to open up the home defence.
Barca had a total of 25 shots but only five on target and their best chance came in the last minute when Sergio Busquets's 18-metre attempt was tipped over the bar by Anthony Lopes.
The second leg will be at the Nou Camp on March 13, a game where Lyon will welcome back France striker and captain Nabil Fekir, who was suspended on Tuesday.
"We could have done better in the first half and converted our chances but we did not concede a goal so our chances are intact," said Lyon defender Leo Dubois.
OL coach Bruno Genesio sprung a surprise by fielding Martin Terrier on the left wing instead of Maxwell Cornet and the 21-year-old did not disappoint.

SUPERB SAVES

Barca dominated possession early on, but Lyon had the first two shots on target and it took a couple of superb saves from Ter Stegen to deny the hosts, who never came that close again.
He stretched to his left to parry a vicious low shot by Hassem Aouar in the fifth minute before making a one-handed save to tip a 25-metre Terrier missile onto his crossbar.
Barca forward Ousmane Dembele came close in the 19th minute when he dribbled past Dubois on the left flank, only for keeper Anthony Lopes to deny him in a one-on-one.
The visitors had the upper hand but were uncharacteristically wasteful as they spurned several counter-attacking opportunities.
A Dembele attempt shaved Lopes's post before Terrier skied his shot over the bar after a superb series of one-twos tore the Barca defence apart as both sides tried to break the deadlock.
Lyon were under siege early in the second period but their defence was perfectly marshalled by Jason Denayer with Dubois also proving decisive against Luis Suarez.
Lopes beat Messi's angled shot away to keep his side level before Dembele was replaced by Philippe Coutinho, who had a clear chance in the 76th but was denied by in-form Lopes.
Barca have now failed to win any of their last six away games in the Champions League knockout stage, with their last victory coming at Arsenal in February 2016.

Chelsea will miss Eden Hazard as much as Arsenal missed Thierry Henry, claims Tony Cascarino

Chelsea will miss Eden Hazard as much as Arsenal missed Thierry Henry, claims Tony Cascarino

Tony Cascarino has compared Eden Hazard’s potential Chelsea departure to Thierry Henry’s move away from Arsenal.

Hazard reminded the Blues what they will be missing if he leaves for Real Madrid this summer with a breathtaking display during the 2-0 victory over West Ham on Monday night.

The Belgian waltzed through the Hammers’ defence to score a wonderful solo goal, before doubling his tally with a fine strike late-on.

It was the kind of match-winning individualism that Stamford Bridge has become used to. After all, Hazard has been directly involved in 49 per cent of the club’s Premier League goals this season.

Hazard was unstoppable against West Ham

Hazard was unstoppable against West Ham

But Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has admitted there is very little he can do to stop the 28-year-old from moving to Madrid if his heart is set on the Bernabeu.

Arsenal were equally powerless when Barcelona came knocking for club legend Henry in 2007, which signalled the beginning of a prolonged period of mediocrity for the Gunners.

And former Blues striker Cascarino, who expects Hazard to leave this summer, believes the potential move could have a similar effect.

“It will be as big a loss to a team as Thierry Henry was when he left to go to Barcelona,” he told talkSPORT.

“He [Hazard] is up there with the very best. If he gets you from a standing start and he stops, you’re in trouble. There aren’t many players I can say that about.

“He goes from zero to 50 in a split second, then he’s gone. He’ll go either way. How many players can go either way?

Henery’s departure hit Arsenal hard

Henery’s departure hit Arsenal hard

“You know he’s going to beat you. Take the first goal last night, there’s not much that any defender could do about that. The speed, acceleration, ability – if you go near him, you know it’s going to be a penalty.

“He is just a very talented boy.

“I do think he’ll leave this summer, it’s a consequence of his contract running down. [Zinendine] Zidane was his hero, so he will want to taste pastures new.”

Hazard, who has spent seven successful years in west London, has always remained open about his ‘dream’ of playing for Madrid one day.

And Cascarino argues it’s fair enough for a player of his calibre to challenge himself at the top level.

“At least we’re not seeing a player down tools,” he added.

“We’re seeing a player play the best football he can.”

The England man will also meet pupils from Ark Elvin Academy in Wembley where City are training on Thursday and they will then travel to the match on Saturday.

The 24-year-old has also reportedly arranged for travel for everyone attending.

“Raheem wanted to do something for the kids from his old school and approached the club to see what could be done,” a source told the Mail.

Football: Spurs to trigger Alderweireld contract extension, says Pochettino

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said the club will activate a one-year extension in defender Toby Alderweireld's contract to keep him at the club until 2020.
The move prevents Belgium international Alderweireld, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United by the British media, from leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.
When asked whether Spurs intend to trigger the clause, Pochettino told a news conference: "Yes, for sure, it's obvious. The same situation as Jan (Vertonghen)."
Earlier this month, Spurs extended centre back Vertonghen's contract until 2020.
Alderweireld, who arrived at Spurs in July 2015 from Atletico Madrid, has been a key player for the north London outfit this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions.
Having won their last five Premier League games, Spurs have crept up to second spot and are six points behind leaders Liverpool.
But Pochettino said it is still premature to talk of Tottenham as title contenders.
"We are there because we have the belief, because we are working hard and of course we have the quality," he said.
"It is hard to be in the position that we are in. Still we are a question mark. We will see if we are capable during the whole season to be consistent like in the first half of the season. Then we can talk that we can fight for big things."
Spurs said full back Serge Aurier has returned to training after recovering from a groin problem, while midfielder Dele Alli will be assessed ahead of Saturday's league clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Alli missed the 5-0 victory over Bournemouth on Boxing Day, having been substituted during last weekend's 6-2 triumph at Everton over a hamstring concern.

West Ham 0-2 Everton: Kurt Zouma and Bernard strikes sees in-form Toffees leapfrog lacklustre Hammers

Everton exploited a dreadful display from West Ham to leapfrog them in the race for seventh spot.

Goals from Kurt Zouma and Bernard in the first-half sealed a 2-0 win for the Toffees, keeping them firmly in the hunt for a potential Europa League spot.

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini has never failed to qualify for Europe since he arrived on the continent and is determined to maintain that proud record this season – but it seems nobody has told his players.

Indeed, on this evidence the fact that West Ham are even in with a chance of finishing as the ‘best of the rest’ serves as a pretty damning indictment of the rest of the league.

The hosts were disorganised and disinterested during a dreadful first half, totally overrun by visitors who looked sharper and more motivated from the off.

Notoriously slow starters, West Ham found themselves behind with just five minutes on the clock for the fifth time this season.

Zouma was the latest beneficiary, the defender losing Issa Diop at a corner before sending a downward header into the ground, up and over the head of Aaron Cresswell on the goal line.

West Ham were all over the place defensively and they were grateful to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski for limiting the early damage with a double save from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bernard, and another to deny Dominic Calvert-Lewin, all within the opening 10 minutes.

A low cross from Bernard then somehow eluded Fabianski, and everyone else, as it rolled across the six-yard box.

A second goal seemed inevitable and it arrived in the 33rd minute, Richarlison playing in Seamus Coleman who brushed off Cresswell and rolled a simple ball square for Brazilian winger Bernard to tap his first Premier League goal into an empty net.

Fabianski came to the rescue again with a smart save to keep out Richarlison, while all West Ham had to show for a terrible opening period was a half-hearted attempted lob from Marko Arnautovic which barely disturbed Everton keeper Jordan Pickford.

Pellegrini summoned Michail Antonio and Javier Hernandez from the bench at half-time, with Pedro Obiang and Lucas Perez – the two worst of a bad bunch – hauled off.

Arnautovic was also sacrificed just after the hour to a chorus of boos from fans still unhappy at his attempts to leave the club for China in January.

West Ham improved as the second half wore on – although they could hardly have played any worse – yet still it was Everton who came closest to scoring again when Richarlison’s header crashed against the crossbar.
