It will go down as one of the greatest nights in Liverpool’s rich history.
Seemingly down and out after being beaten 3-0 by Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, the Reds pulled off an Anfield ‘miracle’ on Tuesday night.
Despite missing two key men through injury in Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Jurgen Klopp’s side stormed to a 4-0 victory to progress to the final for a second successive year.
While the praise has poured in for Klopp and his outstanding group of players, spare a thought for Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde and his squad.
For the second season in a row Barca crumbled when it mattered in the Champions League, having thrown away a three-goal lead against Roma at the quarter-final stage of last year’s competition.
And the Spanish press have not reacted kindly to their latest failure in Europe.
Madrid-centric Marca’s front page carried the headline ‘Fracaso Historico’ – ‘Historic Failure’ – under a picture of the scoreboard at Anfield.
Their report of the match described Barcelona as a ‘shell of themselves’ and said only Arturo Vidal emerged with any credit.
Seven of the Barca players did not even get a mark in their player ratings.
Mundo Deportivo’s front page headline, meanwhile, simply read ‘Sonrojo’, which translates as ‘Embarrassing’.
It’s coverage of the match pointed out that Liverpool ran seven kilometres more than Barca and described the Spanish side’s defending of the fourth goal as ‘shameful’.
AS’s front page headline read ‘Thunder in Anfield’ and said the Reds ‘crushed a trembling Barca like a cockroach’.
Their report also claimed it has left manager Ernesto Valverde ‘in the middle of a crossfire that threatens its continuity’.
Barcelona-based paper Sport carried the headline ‘The biggest farce in history’ on a black background.
Underneath the headline, they describe it as ‘blackest page’ in the club’s history and call their performance ‘inexcusable’.
Liverpool will play either Ajax or Tottenham in the Champions League final.
