Bolton Wanderers news: Micky Gray strongly disagrees with strike and says players are ‘damning’ crisis club

talkSPORT pundit Micky Gray has criticised Bolton Wanderers players for going on strike over unpaid wages, saying they are letting supporters down by refusing to play.

Saturday’s Championship clash against Brentford was postponed, with Trotters stars boycotting the game in protest of their unpaid wages for March and April.

There are now major doubts whether the crisis-hit club will complete their campaign with two games remaining against Brentford and Nottingham Forest, which the EFL have ordered them to play.

But it is unclear how long their strike will continue, as well as what sanctions they may face if the matches are not fulfilled.

However, Bolton may have bigger things to worry about, with the future of the club in jeopardy amid reports Laurence Bassini’s proposed takeover is on the verge of collapse.

It is claimed the former Watford owner has not yet given sufficient proof he has the funds to complete the deal, and EFL chiefs will decide whether or not his takeover bid is suitable in a meeting on Tuesday night.

Despite the club’s financial struggles, the player strike does not sit well with Sunderland legend Gray, who has accused the Trotters stars of failing in their responsibility to the club and letting down their fans.

Speaking on Tuesday’s Jim White show, he said: “That group of Bolton players who are refusing to play a game, they’ve been let down because they haven’t been paid and I completely understand that.

“But wouldn’t you say to yourself: ‘I’m better than that, we’ve got a couple of games left, let’s just play these games for our supporters and for the future of Bolton’?

“There are a group of supporters there who are not able to watch their beloved football club.

“The players in the dressing room have said said, ‘we need a show of hands – are we going to play these games or not, because if not we know what’s going to happen to this club’.

“And I think that’s damning it.

“As a player you’ve got to rise above not picking up your wages to save that football club. It’s not just about the players, those players will come and go, but the supporters are there for life.

“It is their football club and they are the people who are being let down.”

Gray said he faced a similar situation at Sunderland, where he and his team-mates players were told they would only be paid a small portion of their wages until a new buyer was found for the Black Cats.

The difference then, according to Micky, was that the Sunderland players were keen to play on for the club.

“One of the board members, with the manager, came to meet with the players and told us, ‘look, this is what’s going to happen, and if this doesn’t happen there might be no Sunderland until there’s a takeover’.

“We accepted to be paid 20 per cent of our wages and they held onto 80 per cent.

“I know at Bolton it’s 100 per cent, but it’s a similar scenario and all the players had to sit together and come to a decision, whether we would accept that and still play, or say no, we’re not accepting that.

“We had a conversation and accepted the 20 per cent, knowing full well that we would get the other 80 per cent further down the line, and that did happen.”
