Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are ‘playthings of a state’ and should be kicked out Europe, says LaLiga president

LaLiga president Javier Tebas says state-funded Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain should be kicked out of European competitions if found guilty of Financial Fair Play violations.

Tebas, who has been in charge of the Spanish league for six years, hit out at both clubs for ‘inflating the market’ when it comes to signing players.

City are currently being investigated by UEFA for alleged FFP breaches while PSG have faced similar allegations in the past.

Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a domestic treble this season while the Ligue 1 club won their sixth league title in seven seasons.

Speaking at the Financial Times’ Business of Football summit, Tebas said: “There are clubs who could not care less what their real incomes are when they want to sign a player because they receive incomes from a state.

“It forces other clubs into an economic situation which is really living on the edge. It skews the balance of the entire European football structure.

“This is no longer sport. This is no longer an industry. It becomes more like a toy, the plaything of a state. And when it’s a plaything, kids start playing with other kids. You end up ruining the entire system.

“Indeed the origin of this entire problem with the Super League is the inflationary effect that Manchester City and PSG have created across the whole of Europe because the rest of the clubs in Europe want money to compete with these guys.”

Tebas then went on to say that if FFP breaches are proven then both City and PSG should be banned from European competitions.

City expect a positive outcome from the investigation into their alleged breaches, releasing a statement after their case was refereed to the investigatory chamber of the Club Financial Control Body.

“Manchester City is disappointed, but regrettably not surprised, by the sudden announcement of the referral to be made by the CFCB chief investigator Yves Leterme,” the statement read.

“The leaks to media over the last week are indicative of the process that has been overseen by Mr Leterme.

“Manchester City is entirely confident of a positive outcome when the matter is considered by an independent judicial body.

“The accusation of financial irregularities remains entirely false and the CFCB referral ignores a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence provided by Manchester City to the chamber.

“The decision contains mistakes, misinterpretations and confusions fundamentally borne out of a basic lack of due process and there remain significant unresolved matters raised by Manchester City as part of what the club has found to be a wholly unsatisfactory, curtailed, and hostile process.”

LaLiga chief Tebas also dismissed speculation linking him to the vacant Premier League chief executive role.

He added: “No. I am very happy in Spain. I really think the person in the post (Richard) Scudamore was fantastic chief exec. He was doing a great job.”
