“Why not?”, the Argentine said in his press conference ahead of Spurs’ trip to Manchester City on Wednesday evening. “He knows a lot about football and I am going to respect him.”

“In football, all can happen, like in life, you must have trust in yourself and your ability and quality.

“It is good that people like Ronaldinho think you have the quality to win. That increases our belief. Maybe we will be able to beat an amazing team like Manchester City.”

Pochettino and Ronaldinho played together for Paris Saint-Germain from 2001-2003 before the latter joined Barcelona and won the Champions League in 2006.

And Pochettino has said he learnt a lot from the legendary Brazilian during their time together.

He said: “I learnt a lot from him, laughing, smiling, dancing. Football is a sport, if you want to play well, you have to be happy and smile.”

Pochettino is relishing the match against Pep Guardiola’s side, who he still believes are favourites for the tournament despite trailing Spurs 1-0 on aggregate.

“We are going to be more than proud of our run in the Champions League and try to arrive in the semi-final and challenge a team like Man City,” he said.

“Man City is one of the best teams in the world and a clear favourite to win the Premier League and Champions League.

“For us to beat them in the first leg was an amazing result but we know very well the tie is still open and it is going to be very, very tough but we have the belief that we are going to fight. This game is going to be an amazing challenge and fight. I am so motivated and excited.”

“We’re in a good position and it’s a massive opportunity for the club. Whatever happens in this game we can be proud of everything. The day after the game we’ll be ready to work and improve.”
