Football: 'Fuming' Spurs must not dwell on Wolves loss, says Winks

LONDON • Harry Winks has admitted that the deflating 3-1 home defeat by Wolves on Saturday, which stalled Tottenham's Premier League title challenge as soon as it got started, left the Spurs dressing room "fuming".
But the midfielder urged his teammates "not to get carried away with a defeat" before their visit to a rejuvenated Cardiff today.
The Bluebirds are in decent form, having garnered four points from their last two league games, including an impressive win at Leicester over the weekend, and Winks knows more frustration will await should Spurs slip up again.
He said: "What people say on social media, that is their own opinion, but inside the club, we know how far we can go. We have belief.
"To be considered title contenders and to be sitting disappointed that we aren't closer to the top than we'd expect, it just shows us how well we are doing."
But despite Spurs' best first half to a league season, it remains hard to avoid the view that their bid for success on four fronts could once again leave them empty-handed.
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino cited mental fatigue, post-World Cup, as a possible reason for the lethargic second-half display against Wolves. His team had nine players in the semi-finals of the tournament in Russia, more than any other club.

The delay to the opening of their new stadium has also meant Wembley remains their temporary home, while this month's two-legged League Cup semi-final with Chelsea will be followed by their last-16 Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund next month.
This Friday sees Spurs start their FA Cup campaign with a visit to fourth-tier Tranmere Rovers, a further addition to an already-congested holiday fixture schedule.
The counter to all that is that a club with ambitions of challenging for major trophies must expect to face those kinds of demands.
And that is where criticism of their failure to bring in new players in the summer resurfaces - although there could be reinforcements with the January transfer window under way.
Squad depth is so often the key to success and while Spurs' success in keeping the current group of players together was admirable, right now, it appears as though fresh additions would be welcome.
That is particularly so given Son Heung-min, arguably Pochettino's form player, will join up with South Korea at the Asian Cup this month.
However, captain Hugo Lloris still feels that all the ingredients are in place this season for Spurs to win their first piece of silverware since the 2008 League Cup.
Insisting they are "reducing the gap with the best", the France goalkeeper said: "This (trophies) is what we work for. We are in the most competitive country, so we keep working with the same mentality and do our best."

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold was right NOT to have been sent off against Newcastle United, according to former Premier League referee Mark Halsey

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey insists Andre Marriner was right not to send Trent Alexander-Arnold off against Newcastle.

Furious players surrounded the referee at half-time when the Liverpool defender was not sent off for his deliberate handball.

Trent Alexander-Arnold provided two assists against Newcastle

Trent Alexander-Arnold provided two assists against Newcastle

Salomon Rondon’s effort was cleared off the line by Alexander-Arnold with his elbow in the 28th minute and Christian Atsu scored from the follow up.

Fans were also furious as they thought he should have been sent off but he was not even shown a yellow card. The right-back got two assists for the Reds as they beat Newcastle 3-2 at St James’ Park.

Alexander-Arnold kept Rondon’s shot out with his elbow

“I thought Andre was absolutely spot on.” Halsey told talkSPORT. “He had initially denied a goalscoring opportunity but it rebounded off him to a Newcastle player who put the rebound into the back of the net.

“Had he denied a goalscoring opportunity? You have to say no because the ball ended up in the back of the net from a rebound.

“Technically he should have cautioned Trent Alexander-Arnold for deliberate handling of the ball but it wasn’t a sending off because he didn’t technically deny a goalscoring opportunity.

“Had Andre blown his whistle or the ball not come back out to the attacker and Andre had given the penalty for denying a goalscoring opportunity, then he would have sent the player off.

“That’s law. Law 12 fouls and misconduct that is the law. If Andre had given the goal as he did and then sent the Liverpool player off and they would have appealed then they would have won their appeal because he would have been wrong in law.

“The way it all panned out, Andre was correct in law 12.”

Halsey was also asked if the outcome of the incident would have been any different if VAR would have been in use, as it will in the Premier League next season.

He added: “VAR would not have intervened with that incident in Newcastle’s first goal because everything was correct in law so they would not have got involved in that situation.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: How Manchester United boss compares to his predecessors after 19 games in charge

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has secured himself the manager’s job at Manchester United on a permanent basis after a superb spell as interim boss.

Solskjaer, 46, has suffered just one defeat in 13 league games, smashing several records along the way.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided United to victory in 14 of 19 matches during his time as caretaker manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided United to victory in 14 of 19 matches during his time as caretaker manager

Incredibly, the Norwegian has a 73.7 win percentage in all competitions to date, winning 14 of his 19 games in charge, while drawing two land losing three.

But how does he compare to his predecessors after the same amount of games played?

talkSPORT.com takes a look at the last three below…

Jose Mourinho

The two-time Champions League winning boss came to United in the summer of 2016, following the departure of Louis van Gaal.

The former Chelsea boss, who won the Carabao Cup and Europa League during his two-year stint in Manchester, started off his United career in positive fashion with three wins on the bounce.

Jose Mourinho led Manchester United to Europa League glory in May 2017

Back-to-back league defeats against arch nemesis Manchester City and Watford, sandwiched between a disappointing 1-0 loss to Feyenoord, ended Mourinho’s honeymoon period in charge very swiftly.

The Red Devils responded with another sequence of three wins, before losing just one of their next six games thereafter – though they failed to register a single win in the Premier League during that time.

Another poor display in the Europa League, resulting in a 2-1 defeat at Fenerbahce, capped off a disappointing couple of months for Mourinho.

But it all ended in tears for Mourinho at Old Trafford

8

But it all ended in tears for Mourinho at Old Trafford

They started November in positive fashion, first beating Swansea on the road before drawing with Arsenal, winning their 19th game of the season in emphatic fashion against Feyenoord 4-0 at Old Trafford.

Mourinho’s record after his first 19 games at Old Trafford (in all competitions):

W10, D4, L5 – Overall win rate: 52.6 per cent

Louis van Gaal

The enigmatic Dutchman was at the helm at Old Trafford for just under two years, with Van Gaal sacked just two days after delivering his first trophy for the club, the FA Cup, back in May 2016.

His playing style wasn’t easier on the eye, but with that said he still proved to be a success during his time in charge of the Red Devils.

It didn’t start well for Van Gaal though, with the club enduring their worst start to a season since 1986/87, winning just three of their first 10 league games and languishing in ninth place.

Louis van Gaal was sacked by Manchester United after winning the FA Cup

8

Louis van Gaal was sacked by Manchester United after winning the FA Cup

The Red Devils made a dramatic recovery from that awful beginning to the season though, winning seven of their next eight league games.

After the 4-1 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day, United stood in a far healthier league position (third) and four points clear of fifth placed West Ham.

Van Gaal’s record after his first 19 games at Old Trafford (in all competitions):

W10, D5, L4 – Overall win rate: 52.6 per cent

David Moyes

Moyes was sacked as United boss in April 2014, only 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Everton and West Ham boss was chosen by Ferguson to  be his successor when he retired after 26 years in charge of the club in May 2013.

And while it all ended in disaster, the first few months of Moyes’ reign in Manchester weren’t all that bad.

David Moyes was sacked after just 10 months in charge of Manchester United

A rampant win on the road at Swansea ensured Moyes started his United career in the best possible way, securing another four wins from his first 10 games in charge.

The Red Devils went the next nine games unbeaten after that point, recording six wins and three draws.

Moyes’ record after his first 19 games at Old Trafford (in all competitions):

W11, D5, L3 – Overall win rate: 57.9 per cent

But how does Solskjaer compare with rivals Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino?

Chelsea’s approach in the transfer market has not always been the best

One club who have made their fair share of errors in the transfer market is Chelsea. Since being taken over by Roman Abramovich in 2003, the influx of players through the gates of Stamford Bridge has been nothing short of spectacular.

However, not every signing has been a success. If you look at the occupants of their no.9 shirt alone from previous seasons, you can see why the club are perhaps more measured in their business (Khalid Boulahrouz and Franco di Santo spring to mind).

However, it is the players who have left the club in recent years which will be a huge concern to Mr Abramovich.

Kevin De Bruyne is potentially the best midfielder in the world at this moment, but was forced out of Stamford Bridge by Jose Mourinho.

His Belgium team-mate, Romelu Lukaku is also still yet to fulfil his potential, while Mohamed Salah continues to dumbfound critics with his goalscoring exploits.

And, after being released as a 14-year-old from the academy, Declan Rice is proving to Chelsea how trusting in the kids can reap bountiful rewards.

With a host of other young starlets such as Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek now battling for regular game time, Chelsea cannot afford to lose any more potential superstars.

The ominous threat of a transfer ban hangs over the club, so expect to see a raft of loan starlets return to Stamford Bridge.

But just how could Chelsea have looked if they had managed to keep some of their best players?

It’s a sight most Blues fans will want to avert their gaze from, as the prospect of seeing some of the best players in the world on a regular basis at Stamford Bridge could have been a real possibility.

Liverpool's trip to Paris to face PSG didn't go too well in terms of the result, with the Reds falling to a 2-1 loss. However, the travelling supporters still seemed to enjoy themselves in the French capital as they gathered to sing about their team. One new song got an airing too, and it was

Football: Women in football face daily battle, says France coach Corinne Diacre

HONG KONG (AFP) - Trailblazing France coach Corinne Diacre said women in football face a constant struggle for acceptance and are often regarded as "objects" despite rising visibility and media coverage of female players.
Diacre made history when she became the first female coach of a French men's professional team in 2014, and she is now hoping to guide Les Bleues to the women's World Cup title in 2019 on home soil.
But the former France captain, who amassed 121 caps and 14 international goals - including the strike that took France to their maiden World Cup in 2003 - said it had not been an easy journey.
"When I started in football in the 1980s, it was very rare to see a girl playing, we were really looked down upon. Because football was supposedly restricted to men," she told AFP in an interview.
"But unfortunately there are still too many negative things in football. (Not just) sexism, but I also hear a lot of talk about racism and these are things that are very difficult to put up with in 2018."
Diacre was speaking in Hong Kong during a Fifa-organised trip to work with Chan Yuen-ting, another history-maker who, in 2016, became the first woman coach to win a top-flight men's championship.
Attitudes to women in football came into focus this month when Ada Hegerberg, the first female winner of the prestigious Ballon D'Or, was asked if she knew how to "twerk", a sexually suggestive dance, as she received her award.
"Quite honestly, we're confronted by that kind of thing every day. I want to tell you that today nothing shocks me," said Diacre, who coached men's team Clermont in the French second tier for three seasons.

"Today, women are still objects," she added. "You still get asked questions about things that to my eyes are quite frankly completely ridiculous... but we still have to fight today about these issues.
"But we women in football today focus on the important things - that is, our passion for football, and that's all we are about today."
Diacre said media coverage of women's football, including stepped-up live broadcasts of France's top league, had "developed enormously" ahead of the World Cup.
But despite such advances, she said life in football remained doubly complicated for women because they have to contend with factors not faced by men.
"It's true that it's more difficult for us, the difficulties are multiplied by two. We know it's always been like that, so we have to deal with it," the 44-year-old said.
"But there (can be) a lot of wickedness. Really a lot of wickedness, a bit of jealousy I think too. The worst thing is when you prove you're capable of success, it's complicated for them (to accept)."
When Diacre leads France at Paris's Parc des Princes against South Korea for the World Cup opener on June 7, it will underline how far she has travelled.
Diacre, already an international at the time, watched France's home victory at the 1998 men's World Cup in far more humble surroundings - at a campsite, where she had a summer job as a physical instructor to fund her studies.
However, she said she was not day-dreaming about lifting the World Cup in Lyon in July, but was treating it more as a mission handed her by the president of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet.
"I'm not dreaming about it, but yes I've been given this objective by my president: to go and win the World Cup," Diacre said.
"I know what my objective is, I know it will be very important and very, very good for France to win this title," she added.
"But today, even if we're third in the Fifa rankings, we're not the favourites. So we enter this competition as outsiders."
France also face Norway and Nigeria in Group A as they bid to win the title for the first time.
